Bowling for Columbine and Gun Control
As the deadliest mass school shooting in 1998 occurred at Columbine School, the media then blew up, especially “Bowling for Columbine.” This was a tactic that was proposed by a man named Michael Moore to try to rid the violence in schools. This video went viral and spread nationwide. In his video, he proposed that we ban assault weapons. He believed that everyone should have to be licensed to own a gun. In his film he interviewed people and actually showed the effect that an assault rifle can have. Since the release of this movie 13 years later, the number of mass shootings is actually increasing. Why is this? Did this movie really stop shootings or did it help promote them? This angered Moore and he came out with a statement that there will be a stricter gun law if photos from mass shootings were revealed to show people the impact these weapons have rather than just hearing it on tv or the radio. He believed that by seeing detailed photographs it would make people look further into the effects that banning these dangerous weapons could have on the world. So why is it that these shootings keep happening? We may never know. Since then, there have been many more mass shootings along with what is now the deadliest mass school shooting. It is just a coincidence that these attacks keep happening with assault rifles yet no one is doing anything about it. While “Bowling for Columbine” tried to prevent mass shootings from happening again by banning them, there have been more attacks using the same weapon that lashes out this dangerous crime.
