The Mob and Kennedy Assassination

The release of the Kennedy records relating to this assassination hasn’t settled the best-known whodunit in the history of America.  There have been claims of Lee Harvey Oswald being the shooter, allegations of another gunman, or the assassination being a government operation. However, what if it was neither of those options, what if the Assassination was a hit from the Mob?

The assumption about the relationship between President Kennedy and the mafia focused on a man named Sam Giancana who was the former head of Chicago crime syndicate. Giancana was a close Kennedy friend, going as far back as Joseph P. Kennedy who was involved in the bootlegging business during prohibition and also was close to Frank Sinatra. There were also claims that Giancana helped Kennedy win the West Virgina Primary in 1960 by asking to use mob incentive to pressure union members to vote for Kennedy.

Motives that support this mob hit on the President was that the Kennedy Administration, hired the Chicago Mobsters by the CIA to plot the killing of Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro. In failed attempts to kill Castro several mob leaders were upset with President Kennedy because Castro had closed down their casinos in Havama after he took power in 1959. The Mob also became skeptical of the CIA when Giancana requested a wiretap of a suspected affair with his mistress, which caused him to be eliminated by the mob. Also, a newspaper received an anonymous phone call about “big news” in the United States about 20 minutes before the assassination of the President.

The question of who killed Kennedy will forever be a mystery. There will always be the unanswered questions of whether Oswald actually committed this crime or was it a government ploy to keep the United States tension between Cuba or was it a Mob hit due to the failure of killing Castro?

  1. If Kennedy Administration wanted Fidel murdered, then why did he want to use mob hit men? Looking at previous history we sent in our own military to take down unwanted leaders, so why would the Kennedy Administration not follow suite? The only reason I could think of, would be that this incident never was ran by Kennedy himself, but only kept hush hush to those who had ties to mob activities.
