Comics as Propaganda

In the 1950’s comic books were a great source of entertainment. One of the famous comic characters was Captain America. Captain America is a guy that wanted to fight in World War II but was not physically fit but after being worked on by scientists, he was able to become taller and super strong.

Originally created to fight against Nazis in WWII, Captain America was rebranded in the 1950s as Captain America the Commie Smasher during the height of the cold war. In one of his comics, he was quoted saying “the Communists are the Nazis of the 1950s”. His adventures included Asian Communists, the Soviets, and even American-Communist spies.

Captain America is an example of the Propaganda that the US uses to push political agendas. The comic superhero seems to be the easiest character to use because of how patriotic he is and how he is a symbol for how American citizens can fight against their foreign enemies
