Luvox Conspiracy
The facts on this conspiracy are that Eric Harris, one of
the Columbine shooters, had a psychiatric drug, Luvox, in his system during the
time of the shootings. During the time of the initial drug tests, it did not
show up but when it was pointed out, the doctors tested for it directly and
confirmed that it was in his system. “Luvox is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake
Inhibitor (SSRI) that is approved for children and youth (up to age 17) for use
in the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder.” (Breggin)
After reading two articles, one says that there is an
obvious effect of the drug on behavioral actions and another reads that there
is no connections between the drug and Harris’ actions. A post from Peter R.
Breggin M.D. did several studies as a medical expert and realized there was a connection.
In 1994 when the drug was released, the manufacturer said that during clinical
trials, 4% of children developed mania which causes bizarre, elaborated
destructive plans, including mass murder. Breggin decided to conduct his own
study which concluded that 6% of children developed mania which is a high percentage,
especially in long term cases where the percentage increases. Differing from
Breggin, in a Denver news post, they explained that the drug did not correlate
with Harris’ actions. One doctor pointed out that of all ages, there is a 1%
chance that mania is produced and usually that 1% is people that are diagnosed
with Bipolar Affective Disorder. (“Colorado News”)
Overall, I do not know what to believe after reading both
posts. The statistics are shown in both, but neither tell whether Harris was
actually experiencing mania or not. This may never be known, but there will
continue to be conspiracies.
