Doom's selling point was its notorious high level of graphic violence and satanic imagery. Doom was among on of the first video games to be given an M for Mature rating. Due to its violent gore. In its release the game was banned in Germany. The game sparked controversy in the United States when they found out Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, committed the Columbine High School shooting. Eric and Dylan were avid players of Doom. While planning for the massacre. Eric said in his journal that the killing would be "like playing Doom" and "be like the LA riots, the Oklahoma booming, World War II, Vietnam, Duke Nukem and Doom all mixed together". A rumor spread after the shooting that Eric designed a Doom level that looked like the high school, in this level he made his classmate and teachers. They also said Eric would practiced for his role in the shooting by playing the level over and over. Eric did design Doom levels, but none were ever based on the High school shooting.

Do you believe that the video game Doom caused Eric and Dylan to go on a school shooting? Or was this just away to have kids stop playing rated M games. Doom is one of the top ten most controversial games of all time. Parent of the victims made lawsuits against the video games manufacturers and they were unsuccessful. The game did not force or influence the kids to shoot up a school.
