New Coke

In the early 1980s, Coca-Cola was close to losing the so called "cola war" with Pepsi. Years before Coca-Cola's shares were staying the same were as Pepsi's was climbing up the market. Pepsi was blowing up in supermarkets all around the U.S. where as Coke held their sales from Vending machines and restaurants. Coke was losing its favoritism with the consumers due to other forms of soda being made by Coke itself and Pepsi. Diet Coke was also causing original Coke to lose its popularity. Diet Coke climbed up the ranks in the Cola polls to a strong #4. By the end of 1984 it was as high as #3. So, in an attempt to boost Coke's popularity up, Coke invents a so called "New Coke". They changed the artificial sweeteners in Diet Coke to high fructose corn syrup. After a few years of balancing the flavors it was finally ready. It did wonders in taste tests as everyone enjoyed it over the original Coke. They discontinued the original coke due to the fear that Coke drinkers would choose Pepsi due to its original drink. People hated New Coke. They felt as if they were stripped away from their livelihood when this came to be and the original was dropped. Coke had made their consumers feel as if Coke was apart of their everyday lives. They eventually brought back the Original Coke, but changed its name to Classic Coke. This actually helped their popularity with consumers due to the fulfillment of the consumers wants. The conspiracy behind this is, did coke intentionally make its new drink to boost its original Coke or did they just slip up and make a drink that didn't sell?
